NLEAP Project

National Language Equality and Advancement Project (NLEAP)
Project Location : Selected DS Divisions ( Kandy, Nuwaraeliya, Matale)

 Project Description:

The project ‘’NLEAP’’ (National Language equality advanced project) supported by the government of Canada worked to promote language rights, national language policy and easy methods of learning second language (Sinhala /Tamil). The project was implemented in selected Divisional secretariats in Central province (Kandy, Mathale and Nuwara – Eliya). As a part of this initiative Samadana/m has formed LC – CAT groups and BCF groups ( Bilingual Child Forum) for each and every Divisional secretariat

These two groups worked as community activists who are implementing the project at the grassroots level. Awareness programs, training programs and language teaching programs were conducted through this project for people representing different strata such as religious leaders, children, youth, government officials, local politicians. Apart from this, language was taught to the rural and plantation people through innovative activities such as language folk schools and work camps.
Also, empowering the community to take necessary actions against the incidents of violation of language rights, exerting pressure on the government, private institutions and political authorities for this purpose, and thereby giving the community the opportunity to significantly assert their language rights, are highlighted successes of this project..
